About the project
Intrigued by the way rappers combine music and literature to create intricate rhyme schemes, I started analyzing rhymes by color coding lyrics. Through this project, I wanted to illustrate the beauty of the Korean Language, both spoken and written.
In particular, I was deeply touched by artists who inherit the zeal of heroes who achieved liberation, overcoming the painful history of a country taken away from its people. Through their lyrics, modern poets of Korea remember their roots and tell their unique stories while proudly expressing their Korean identity.
In order to express this, fonts generated by restoring the handwriting of the indepedence activist Yun Bong Gil was used for [My Land], and that of An Jung Geun for [Unsung Heroes]. Furthermore, for [Don Quixote], I used Pak Yong Jun’s font restored from a crucial document in The Gwangju Democratic Movement.
Although there is a language barrier and my translations may not do the original lyrics justice, I thought their voices are worth sharing. I hope the poets’ messages come across to the readers.
